Sgro up

Something had been bothering me about this whole Judy Sgro/Romanian stripper affair, which was odd considering I'd barely read anything about it and couldn't care less. Thankfully, perennial Globe and Mail letter-writer Jean-Claude Killey (not him, unfortunately) nailed it yesterday:

Could you maybe stop using the word "stripper" so frequently — instead of "woman" — when you mention the person Judy Sgro allegedly intervened to help? It's acceptable to mention what she did for a living, but I suspect you might not be so inflammatory if she were a carpenter.

The scandal, don't forget, lies not in this person's choice of profession.

Sure it doesn't. Certainly no one told the National Post. With Killey's letter fresh in mind, I had a good chuckle at this morning's front page headline: Top Sgro aide visited strip-club owner at work, and at the accompanying picture of Terry Koumoudouros — who is, visually speaking, basically a caricature of a strip club owner — with one of his employees, complete with pole, baring most of her arse in the background. Classy! I'm finding it hard to picture a foreman and his band-saw in Terry's place.
