Congratulations to the Toronto Star for the most ridiculous editorial I've read in ages. The best part is definitely as follows:

...if Wayne Gretzky, executive director of Team Canada, selects [Todd Bertuzzi] for the [Olympic] team, The Great One will be making a great mistake. Playing ability alone should not be the basis for making Team Canada. Personal character should also be a factor. Imagine the tarnish on a hockey gold medal if Bertuzzi scored the deciding goal. Imagine the message that would send to Canadian kids dreaming of hockey glory: Break a neck; win the gold.

Bertuzzi should have been banned from the NHL for life, not for 20 games plus an imaginary season. If Steve Moore's career is over, why shouldn't Bertuzzi's playing days end too? And the NHL should finally accept its responsibility for the unbridled violence in hockey and ban all blows to the head, whether they are inflicted by a fist, a stick or a glove.

I'd say that the editorial was written by children.

Unfortunately, I can't say that, because I know actual children don't think so lowly of themselves as to believe something as fallaciously demented as "Break a neck; win the gold."

I guess the editorialists over at The Star don't realize that infants don't play hockey?

Call me dense, but I'm not seeing why this is so ridiculous. The man broke someone's neck, and is entirely culpable. His career should be over.

The editorial was a little dramatic, but I do accept the point that his penalty was light relative to the crime. Look - he got 20 games. That's it. McSorly got a year that became life. Of course, McSorly sucked.

In practice, alas, the length of suspension seems to be based on the number of times the incident gets replayed on SportsCentre. No replays of Niedermeyer cross-checking Domi in the face? No suspension. Endless replays of Domi elbowing Niedermeyer (an action that looks more exaggerated because Domi is so much shorter)? Off he goes.

As for suspensions based on damage done.... so if I take a two handed swing at your head, and miss (or have it blocked by one of your team-mates, or you otherwise avoid serious injury), that's somehow less serious, with the exact same intent behind it? In practice, it means about 80% shorter suspensions, if you get any at all. That's a bigger travesty than Bertuzzi, but because there's no sickening footage of a player crumpling to replay, it gets no attention.
