New new pornography
I'm not the first to say that Twin Cinema, the New Pornographers' latest (which "comes out" August 23rd but is available now if you seek it with all your soul), takes more time to elicit shouts of delight than the first two. And I'm still in the middle of that process. But the impression that I'm listening to something earth-shatteringly terrific is gradually and inexorably building. "Use It," an MP3 of which is available from Matador (linked above), isn't one of the more groundbreaking tracks on the album, but it's inescapably different and absolutely shit-hot. These men and woman kick ass.

Also remarkable is the "The Bleeding Heart Show." What starts out sort of ho-hum eventually builds to the New Pornographers running full tilt into one of their anthemic finales. Then, when you think it can't get any better, Neko Case's voice cuts through the choir and starts soaring all over the place. Cue drum fills that just get more and more outrageous, fade to black, and you've got a tune that I can't frigging stop playing.

I guess that answers my only question (did Neko Case leave the band like she was kind of threatening to?). I accidentally turned a bunch of Americans into New Pornographites when I gave the group the briefest of mentions on my site... people have been sending me their own hand-burned CDs full of power pop ever since, as though I was some kind of Indie Benedict XVI. Let's see if they can really take over from the Arcade Fire as the Canadian Band Actually Worth Listening To, And To Hell With The Tragically Hip...
