Sun follies

Paul Jackson, national treasure:

Politically, the bishop [Fred Henry] and I have little in common, I being a zealous Conservative in the mould of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher…

(Hey, what's that rumbling noise coming from Simi Valley? Oh no! Zombie Reagan bursts forth from his tomb! And he's headed north!)

This is also a classic:

Just who are the antagonists wanting to both humiliate Henry and bring him to his knees.

Frankly, I couldn't tell you, my guess being so-called privacy laws protect them from public exposure.

No, please, allow me: their names are Carol Johnson and Norman Greenfield. Here's Jackson's Sun counterpart Bill Kauffman with an entire column about Greenfield that ran a week ago yesterday, for crying out loud. If Google's too much of a stretch, all Jackson needed to do was read his own paper.

While I'm here, remember that there are just six days left to enter the Calgary Sun's op/ed contest. Feature this:

…your column will appear in either the Sunday Comment section or in ShowTime, along with your photo, joining other heavy-hitting Sunday Sun columnists who have won National Newspaper Awards and even the Pulitzer Prize.

Whoah, whoah, the what-itzer prize? For a Calgary Sun columnist? Someone's telling pork pies, surely. The original contest announcement holds the answer:

…your column will appear in either this Comment section or our Sunday Magazine, along with your photo, joining other heavy-hitting Sunday Sun columnists who have won National Newspaper Awards and even the Pulitzer Prize, including: Greg Weston, George Will, Linda Williamson, Ted Byfield, Paul Jackson, Peter Worthington, Eric Margolis, Bishop Fred Henry, Mindelle Jacobs, Ann Coulter, Ian Robinson, Doug Fisher, Lyn Cockburn and a host of others, including me.

I have no access to the Sun's archives, so I'm going to assume that at some point in the history of time, something George Will wrote was printed in the Calgary Sun. It's still a rather silly thing to say, but then, I'd be disappointed if I didn't find such things in Quebecor's bottom drawer. That's why I vist every single day.

George Will's work has appeared regularily in the Calgary Sun for years. Granted its syndicated, but it's still in the paper often. A quick search of the Calgary Sun's archives, which I do have access to, shows his byline has been in the paper 194 times since 1998.

George Will? Gee, from that list, I would have guessed it was Ian Robinson.

Don't be so hard on Paul Jackson.

He is a very good writer, technically.

He is really a well meaning man.

His ego has overtaken his ability to be relevant though.

The same for Link Byfield can be said too.

Good stuff on your blog.
