Case the joint

Clubby, knee-jerk anti-Americanism in action on Sunday night:

CARL NEWMAN:Can't the US and Canada just get together and meet half way [on Thanksgiving]?
AUDIENCE MEMBER: Fuck the US!
NEKO CASE: Hey, fuck you, man.

It wasn't awkward or anything. Case handled it with good-natured aplomb — really ridiculously good-looking aplomb — but it was an interesting snapshot of Toronto's snivelling hipster class caught with its indie-rock pants down.

And that's the only remotely negative thing I have to say about the New Pornographers' outrageously enjoyable Thanksgiving Sunday show at Toronto's best medium-big venue, the lamentable Phoenix Concert Theatre. It was one of those shows where I mostly just kind of stared and grinned, and it's to the Pornos' credit that they could make live versions of pitch-perfect studio tracks like "Use It" and "The Bleeding Heart Show" seem fresh and worthwhile in a live environment, even to someone who's listened to each about 2,500 times since Twin Cinema dropped.

Anyway, holy crap is Neko Case a good-looking woman. This was the first time I'd seen any of these musicians live in any context and, as ridiculous as it sounds, Case's stage presence had this sort of historic air about it. I've simply never thought of the New Pornographers as a live band, and to see them all out there together, including at times Dan Bejar (who comes off exactly as I thought he would — as a pretentious, drunken twit), was decidedly, gloriously odd. Some songs just didn't need to be played live; others, most notably "It's Only Divine Right," absolutely killed. But overall, the experience of seeing what is inherently and inevitably a studio project play a rock solid live show made for a really tremendous evening. In honour of it, I'm currently re-re-discovering "The Laws Have Changed." Turn that shit up.

As someone who has relatives on both sides of the border, I hope we never meet halfway. Two Thanksgivings are better than one. :)

The Vancouver show was just too close to a moving day that could have used even more advance packing. I'm glad to hear the full lineup put on a good show. Dan Bejar may be all that in terms of being a drunked twit but Destroyer's Your Blues was a great album.

She's actually quite ugly according to my eyes. She did a show here in Mtl and really flopped a couple of years ago, I think she got upset by a heckler and walked off ...the bar folk and those who paid to go in were most displeased.
