Still making my way through "the best of 2005"

Why didn't anyone tell me about Art Brut? I generally avoid anything described as "art punk" like cats avoid rocking chairs, but this album is the furthest thing from pretentious. Any band that claims "We're gonna be the band that writes the song that makes Israel and Palestine get along" can safely be assumed to get the joke.

I've always found them far too ironic for my tastes...to me, they're the height of hipster pretentiousness.

Ironic I'll give you, Matthew, but surely they aren't the height of hipster pretentiousness. "I've seen her naked, twice!" he crows about his brand new girlfriend. "I've seen her naked, TWICE!" They're trying to make you smile at least. Pretentious hipsters tend not to do that.

I don't know...it has that whole "aren't we so smart and clever?" thing going on, which I'd say defines hipster pretension. Though I will grant you that they're a little more enjoyable than, say, Arctic Monkeys or Hard-Fi (and I say that as a fan of Hard-Fi)...
