Good work; bad leader

In the New York Times Magazine,The World Anti-Doping Agency's Dick Pound comes clean — to my knowledge for the first time — about his allegations of drug use in the NHL:

Take the ruckus he caused when he charged that one-third of players in the National Hockey League, or about seven per team, were using illegal performance enhancers. Sitting in his office, I asked him how he came up with that estimate. He leaned back in his chair and chuckled, completely unabashed to admit that he had just invented it. "It was pick a number," he said. "So it’s 20 percent. Twenty-five percent. Call me a liar."

UPDATE Tuesday: At Macleans.ca, my short history of Pound's oratorial excellence.

How does this guy still have a job? He admits to making up accusatory figures regarding a sport we proudly call our own.

If canadian sport officials have any say in this canadian's appointment at the WADA, they should exercise their influence and have him removed. Shame.

What exactly is the problem here? He seems completely qualified for employment in any given Federal Ministry, so why not WADA???

Dick Pound you are a liar. And since your agency is committed to removing the lying and cheating from sport, perhaps you should turn your McCarthy-esque witch hunt on yourself.

This is the first time in a long while that I've had a little respect for the man. Not for fabricating the number, mind you, but for baldly admitting it. This crap happens far too and it's rare that these alleged facts are put to the most modest of tests. This admission might shake a few reporters from their slumber and get them to think, hey, why don't I ask the official where that startling number came from rather than witlessly repeating it as fact?

Good on ya, Dick.
