Time to spill?

...is the headline I should have come up with (instead of my editor) for my latest at Macleans.ca, on the prospect of Maher Arar pursuing legal action against media outlets or individual journalists to discover who leaked the incriminating b-s about him in 2003. Basically, his lawyer doesn't think his client should have to. He makes an interesting case, I think.

Good article. I have long wondered why the journalism trade does not adopt an up front code of ethics for everyone to see. Much like accountants, lawyers, doctors, etc...

They should also have a peer group (with, perhaps a modest representation of lay people)that enforces the code and dispenses discipline as needed.

This would, in my view, go a very long way to enhancing the credibility of the trade.

The Arar matter would be a perfect opportunity for some very serious introspection. The evidence to date, however, is that the journalism trade is incapable of such thought and discussion. Too bad.
