Any time now. Wait for it…

Canadians are bitching up a storm down in the Yucatan that the government — the Canadian government, mind you — hasn’t gotten them out of Wilma-ravaged Cancun. I assume this is because these Canadians are black, poor, and too dependent on government handouts, or something like that, and I assume we’ll be reading all about it here and here very shortly. I recommend checking hourly.

I’ll say they sure are dependent on the government if they’re expecting it to bail them out of their poor vacationing choices. Sheesh.

Not to mention their inability to dodge a hurricane that was seen approaching, what, seven days in advance? After deliberately scheduling a holiday in the middle of hurricane season in an area known for hurricanes, in an effort to get a better price on the all-inclusive package? Cry me a freakin’ river, baby! I know it sucks to loose out on the last week of a holiday - but having made that choice, now is the time to suck it up.

The problem is not the colour of their skin; it’s deeply rooted in vacationer culture, and encouraged by the intellectual elite…

I really can’t understand why all these people are bitching about being stuck in a resort town. I’m sure they’re being fed although I imagine the “all you can drink” part of the all inclusive package is gone. Sure there’s no electricity or running water but so what, my cottage has neither and I go up there every chance I get. Go jump in the ocean and enjoy the bonus week off.

You imply I criticized the residents of New Orleans because they were black. Why didn’t you actually link to the original post, instead of misrepresenting it from the safety of a lower directory?

If you also look closely, you won’t see any posts at SDA about the topic you refer to. And yes - if you don’t think their demand the the Canadian government come save them is rooted in Canadian Entitlement Derangement Syndrome, then by all means - provide an alternate thesis.

However, in the future, show some integrity and either provide a complete quote and link to support your self-indulgent snidefests, or keep my name out of it.

    Kate,

Here’s my alternative thesis, then: the tourists in Cancun failed to evacuate or cancel their trips for precisely the reasons you attributed to the New Orleanians — because they’re used to everything working out alright. (Pretty much nothing has ever worked out right for most of the New Orleanians in question, so that explanation never made any sense to me.) I thought it was odd that you would focus so much on New Orleans and not at all on Cancun, since we’re seeing the phenomenon you saw in NO happening among affluent people, i.e., people who make your case about Entitlement Derangement Syndrome far better than Katrina’s refugees.

As for the “black thing”, I deliberately didn’t mention your name because I had in mind mostly some of your commenters (e.g., Kathy Shaidle), who tend to focus more on those angles than you do. Mostly I was trying to mock what I see as a penchant for easy explanations. I meant nothing particularly sinister by it.
